Building Northern Alberta’s Fiber Backbone
ROHL Gateway Fiber was born from a bold vision: to connect northern Canada with a resilient, high-capacity fiber backbone. In 2000, we deployed 24 strands along the Edmonton–Fort St. John corridor, laying the foundation for what would become a key piece of Canada’s digital infrastructure. Today, this route not only supports northern Canada but also serves as a vital link between Alaska and the continental U.S., delivering a 99.9% uptime.
ROHL Expands Fiber North for Carriers, ISPs, & 5G
As demand for broadband surged during the pandemic, digital inequity across northern Canada became impossible to ignore. ROHL responded with critical infrastructure investment:
- 595 km fiber expansion north to High Level completed in 2022
- High-capacity, diverse routes that improve reliability and reduce costs for carriers and ISPs
- Geographic and geological diversity that enhances resilience across challenging terrain
To further elevate performance, ROHL partnered with Ciena Networks to launch a new wavelength platform:
- Ciena 6500 system enables scalable service from 10 Gbps to 400 Gbps
- Supports long-haul, mid-mile, 5G mobility, WISPs, and air-gapped OTN
- Built for flexibility, speed, and secure delivery in remote and mission-critical applications
Built for the Future: ROHL’s Strategic Overbuild for Sovereign Connectivity
In 2025, ROHL is once again expanding the edge of Canada’s digital infrastructure by overbuilding our existing fiber network to deliver ultra low-latency, high-capacity pathways stretching all the way to the Arctic Ocean.
This next-generation build is purpose-built to support:
- AI and Hyperscale workloads entering the north
- LEO and GEO satellite ground networks
- Space agencies and sovereign data initiatives
- Remote energy, mining, and resource operations
